When You Need Escape from Your Life

by Jessica Van Roekel | Oct 3, 2017 | Christian Living

refuge living

Unmet Expectations

Escape. Retreat. Refuge. We all long for some type of relief at some point in our lives. For some it’s tragedy, health scares, or just the mundane everyday-ness of life. And sometimes, in one day, we can be at the top of the world and in the depths of the. Our emotions run rampant and we feel ecstatic one moment and ticked off the next. Why is that?

Emotions are fickle, unreliable little tyrants who have far too much control in our life. Circumstances are those things that drive the emotions so if emotions are tyrants and circumstances are conductors, then what do we do with what we feel? How can we process our emotions and feelings and frustrations in the midst of controlling circumstances?

By living in refuge.

Refuge Living

Refuge is defined as a shelter, protection, aid or relief. God is all of that. He shelters us. We find comfort in his love. He protects us by defending us. He offers us aid if we will accept it. And sometimes, he just plain offers us relief for a brief moment when we meet him in the secret place.

Living this life is a both/and kind of experience. We live in this world where we experience all the good and bad the world has to offer. We also live in God’s kingdom where we find peace and comfort that makes no sense when we consider our circumstances.

But back to those emotions. Process your emotions in the refuge that God provides. Show him your hurts. Scream your pain. Unfold your hands from your shame. He welcomes you with open arms. He pulls on threads that don’t belong and replaces them with vibrancy that makes your life nuanced with depth and color.

“The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.” Psalm 9:9-10.

Relief

Seek him. Seek him for relief from life. It’s easy to self-medicate ourselves with food, chocolate, coffee, alcohol, drugs, tv, pleasure, or hobbies. True relief comes when we bring ourselves, our messed up selves, to God and say: “Here I am. I can’t keep going. Help.” And he does.

He gently wipes your tears. You’re kindly pointed in the right direction, and he walks with you. He won’t forsake you if you seek him.

Seek him and find him.

Application

  •  Grab a 3×5 card and write down the main controlling emotion you struggle with.
  •  Head to Bible Gateway and type in that emotion in the search box.
  •  Choose a verse that speaks to your need and write it under the emotion on the 3×5 card.
  •  Tape the 3×5 card in a place where you see it regularly.

Where is Your Refuge?

by Jessica Van Roekel | Sep 12, 2017 | Christian Living

God is our refuge

Our world is in distress. It’s like I can hear it gasping for breath and flatlining as disaster after disaster overtakes. Yet within the disaster is a unifying, rallying cry of the human spirit. Collectively, we turn to the One who holds our hearts in his hand.

God is my refuge. He is my safe place, my rock and my salvation. He lifts my head when I cannot hold it up. I run to him and he hears my cry. He is my God and my Savior. Is he yours?

Do you turn to him when the world collapses? Or do you turn to your strength? When I face insurmountable odds, I’m reminded anew how weak I am and how strong he is. Fire. Flood. Health. Disappointment. Heartache. Failed relationships.

Life doesn’t make sense, and sometimes God doesn’t make sense. However, if we have ears to hear and eyes to see and a heart that runs to him, he reveals himself. The mystery unravels and new depths of God’s truth is deposited in our hearts.

He is our rock and our refuge, but we have to run to him. When literal storms come we head for shelter, and when emotional storms come, God is our best shelter. Sometimes his rescue doesn’t come in the form of removing us from the situation, but comes in the form of refuge.

He is our shield and our defense. We align our lives with his and find comfort and rescue even when our lives fall apart. I don’t understand why we’re facing so much natural devastation. It could be that the earth is crying out, the rocks are praising him, and the seas are roaring because we’ve failed to praise him. But I refuse to explain the reason for the multitude of disasters this world is experiencing, because God’s ways and thoughts are not mine.

But what I am willing to explain is this: God is for us not against. He is just and kind. His heart beats passionately for us and he is the safest place for us.

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a prayer for all of us facing life changing circumstances. Today I wanted to give you the prayer in a printable form so that you can see the reminders of God’s love before you. I know what it’s like to need those visual reminders of God’s goodness because sometimes the circumstances seem so large.

The One Thing that Makes Waiting on God Hard

by Jessica Van Roekel | Feb 7, 2017 | Christian Living

wait on God

Wait.

Patience.

These are not my favorite words. Sometimes they induce a temper tantrum, foot stomping, roll on the ground kind of response.

But God, in his infinite grace and mercy, draws me closer to him with these very words and I think of this Andrew Murray quote:

It [patience] is the highest expression of our faith in his goodness and faithfulness. It brings the soul perfect rest in the assurance that God is carrying on His work.

I’m bringing your a video devotional today and sharing how I deal with those pesky words of “wait” and “patient.”

Who`s feeling like an underdog in the story of your life? Sometimes it feels like the weight of the story is too heavy to handle. I love this quote by Hudson Taylor because it reminds me of who is on my side. Head to LifeAudio to listen to my episode on Hope for the Underdog.

Joy. Three little letters, yet they bring so much to our lives. But, I`ve discovered I have to be a joy-seeker and joy-finder and joy-capturer if I want the benefits of joy. My friends, Pamela Farrel Author and Karen Whiting have written a book "Growing a Joyful Heart" all about finding joy. They have stories from their lives, historic stories, and of course, biblical accounts of joy. You can even find my devotion about finding joy in a difficult season in the book.

Faith. It grows when we practice it. But usually it’s those difficult situations we don’t really want to be in that cause us to need to activate faith. So, we have a choice: Turn away from God or turn toward toward God. Sometimes turning toward God means planting our feet on the promises of God and hanging on for dear life. Let’s stand together, shoulder to shoulder, believing He is a promise-keeping, way-making God.

Have you ever experienced crushing disappointment? It stops us in our tracks, and we need a moment to orient ourselves to the emotions it stirs within us. Life is not without hardship and the difficulties we face can crush us or become a catalyst to uncovering the power of the hope that does not disappoint.

The labor and heaviness Jesus refers to is the self-sufficiency we rely on and the burdens we place on ourselves. He is there to help us, but so often we stamp our foot like a toddler and demand we “do it myself.” Jesus provides us the help we need to relieve us of our need to be independent. It is strength to rely on him, not weakness.

Life is a little like holding a rose. Sometimes we can get pricked by thorns no matter how hard we try and avoid them. Other times, we notice the unfolding of beauty and soak it in. Through it all, God is good, near, and present to be enjoyed. (Thorns and all.) #reframingrejectionbook #welcomegrace #hope #womenofgod #relatable #lookup #peace
